MOLD - MILDEW - FUNGUS

There are many types of mold. While mold may seem annoying when it spoils your food, it has medicinal uses, and is used to make beer and cheese. Did you know that the antibiotic Penicillin comes from mold? Read about Alexander Fleming's accidental discovery of Penicillin as an antibiotic here. Or get a nice book about Fleming.

Above is a cutting from a dying branch on a seedling. Green part of Sequoia seedling turning brown with some fungus.

Photo shows the tip of the dead branch with ball of fungus on it.

Above is the fungus under microscopic examination taken with 35mm camera. 7X photo eyepiece and 10x achromat objective = 70X. Believed to be Botrytis cinerea.

Above is the same fungus taken with CanonA40 digital camera on 2/10/03. 10XWF eyepiece and 40x achromat = 400x.

The World of the Microscope. This is a middle school to high school level book. It is filled with great illustrations and explanations. There are dozens of ideas for exploring the world of ordinary objects such as hair and epithelial cells, preparing cultures of mold and bacteria, and examining the multitude of specimens in our environment. There are hints and tips in preparing slides, making and using a makeshift microtome, staining techniques, and exploring the world of microfossils. Although a short book, it is very comprehensive and chock full of good ideas, as well as pictorial explanations of everything related to microscopy. Example- the process of staining is nicely illustrated, although this is not a how-to section. Lots of do-it-yourself ideas regarding specimen preparation and mounting are very visual. It is certainly motivational, and an excellent starting point for a beginner.
