This is a middle school to high school level book. It is filled with great illustrations and explanations. There are dozens of ideas for exploring the world of ordinary objects such as hair and epithelial cells, preparing cultures of mold and bacteria, and examining the multitude of specimens in our environment. There are hints and tips in preparing slides, making and using a makeshift microtome, staining techniques, and exploring the world of microfossils. Although a short book, it is very comprehensive and chock full of good ideas, as well as pictorial explanations of everything related to microscopy. Example- the process of staining is nicely illustrated, although this is not a how-to section. Lots of do-it-yourself ideas regarding specimen preparation and mounting are very visual. It is certainly motivational, and an excellent starting point for a beginner.
